Body Paragraphs:

Members of the Essex Police Commercial Vehicle Unit were invited to IVECO’s head office in Basildon for a training day concerning LNG-powered vehicles.

Sergeant Daniel Parsons, PC Rob Andrews, PC Jason Bullock and PC Gary Winfield attended the event which, the manufacturer says, taught them how to handle LNG in an accident, and about the fuel’s environmental benefits over diesel.

Organised by IVECO’s senior technical trainer for the UK & Ireland, Ian Longman, the day gave the Police personnel a close-up look at a Stralis NP 460hp 6x2 tractor.

The tractor unit was fitted with steel LNG tanks which, IVECO claims, offers better resistance to collisions than diesel fuel tanks. They’re also able to withstand direct impacts, vehicle rollovers and fires.

Longman explained: “Over the years we have learned how to use diesel safely, by understanding exactly how to handle it. Now we are doing the same with LNG, which actually has many safety advantages over diesel. It’s non-toxic, non-corrosive, and has no potential for ground or water contamination in the event of a spillage.”

“The information we learnt on the course was hugely beneficial. Our knowledge of LNG prior to the day was limited, but we’ve come away with key information we can share with our team,” said PC Andrews.
